Boycotting India Match for Solidarity with Bangladesh: Pakistan PM

Pakistan has made a final decision not to play against India in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed this matter on Wednesday. He spoke during a federal cabinet meeting.

He stated that his government took this harsh step to show solidarity with Bangladesh. At the same time, he called for keeping sports free from all political influence.

Context of the Boycott

The main reason for this decision is the recent controversial actions by the ICC. Recently, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) requested to play matches at a neutral venue instead of India. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) did not accept this demand.

Instead, they removed Bangladesh and included Scotland right before the tournament started. Consequently, Pakistan is boycotting the high-voltage match against India on February 15 to protest this behavior.

Questions Over ICC’s Neutrality

Government sources in Islamabad claim the ICC is currently running on the unspoken orders of the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI). Specifically, Pakistan has accused ICC Chief Jay Shah of imposing unilateral decisions.

According to them, the global cricket governing body is following double standards. This goes against the principles of fair play and justice. Therefore, Pakistan decided not to play against India as a protest against these irregularities.

ICC’s Stance and Appeal

The ICC has reacted following Pakistan’s announcement. In a statement, the body requested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to reconsider the matter.

The ICC says they respect the decisions of any national government. However, they warned that this boycott would hurt the emotions of millions of cricket fans globally. The organization has called for finding a respectful and mutual resolution to the crisis.

Uncertainty Over Tournament Future

The World Cup is scheduled to take place from February 7 to March 8. It is being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

The Pakistan team has already reached Colombo, Sri Lanka, to participate. However, their refusal to play against arch-rivals India has created new uncertainty. Now, the overall future and appeal of the tournament are at stake.
