Trump Adopts ‘Indirect’ Strategy to Heighten Pressure on Iran

A diplomatic resolution to the nuclear crisis would undeniably be a pivotal development for both the Middle East and the global community. As Iranian and American diplomats prepare to sit across the table in Geneva, Switzerland, US President Donald Trump delivered a significant message from Air Force One. He announced that, although he will not be physically present, he intends to be involved in these high-stakes negotiations “indirectly.” Consequently, this statement has intensified the geopolitical atmosphere surrounding Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to Geneva.

Even though President Trump described Iran as a “tough negotiator,” he remains optimistic about the outcome. He believes that Tehran has learned a hard lesson from the conflict last June. During that period, the US directly participated in a 12-day war between Israel and Iran, bombing three Iranian nuclear sites. Trump speculates that Iran wishes to avoid a recurrence of such devastating consequences, suggesting they might be more flexible this time around.

However, despite the return to the negotiating table, the demands of the two sides appear to be poles apart. This divergence remains the biggest hurdle. Washington is demanding that Iran completely cease uranium enrichment on its own soil. Furthermore, the US seeks to expand the scope of the agreement to include non-nuclear issues, specifically Iran’s missile stockpile.

In stark contrast, Tehran has firmly rejected the “zero uranium enrichment” policy and has stated clearly that its missile capabilities are not up for discussion. Their stance is singular: they will only consider limiting their program in exchange for the immediate lifting of sanctions.

While the search for peace continues in Geneva, the drums of war are beating in the Gulf region. The US has projected power by deploying a second aircraft carrier to the area. Simultaneously, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, has issued a stern warning: any attack on Iran will not remain contained but will spiral into a full-scale regional war.

Ultimately, in this complex game of diplomatic chess, it remains to be seen who will prevail—Trump’s pressure tactics or Iran’s unyielding stance.
