After a prolonged absence, Shakib Al Hasan is finally poised to don the national jersey once again. According to plans outlined by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the premier all-rounder is expected to return to action during the home series against Pakistan this coming March.
Shakib, who has not been in the country since August 2024, had expressed a desire to play the Mirpur Test against South Africa, but circumstances prevented his participation. He has not featured for the national side since the tours of Pakistan and India. Speculation surrounding his retirement also remains unresolved.
However, the BCB has clarified that there are currently no plans for a dedicated farewell series. Instead, the board is keen for Shakib to make a full return and continue representing the country for a while longer. BCB Director Asif Akbar stated, “The President is in dialogue with the relevant government authorities. We are optimistic about seeing Shakib back on the field against Pakistan in March.”
Shakib himself has recently given positive signals regarding his return. In a recent interview, he remarked, “I still want to play a series properly before retiring. That feels like the right way to go for me.”
A decision regarding Shakib’s return was solidified during a BCB board meeting on January 24. Directors Amjad Hossain and Asif Akbar confirmed that the matter is being coordinated with the government to ensure his smooth return.
According to the schedule, Bangladesh will host Pakistan for a three-match ODI series in March, followed by a two-match Test series in May. These upcoming fixtures are seen as the most likely platform for the start of a new chapter in Shakib’s international career.
