Beyond the Red Carpet: How the Oscars Actually Determine Cinematic Excellence

The Academy Awards—famously known as the Oscars—stand as the ultimate peak of cinematic achievement. While we all love the glamour of the red carpet, the road to holding that 8.5-pound golden statuette is paved with a meticulous and highly secretive selection process.

Contrary to popular belief, the winners aren’t picked by a tiny group of critics behind closed doors. Here’s a human-centric look at how the world’s most prestigious film award is decided.

The Power Behind the Vote

The decision-making power lies with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). This isn’t just a committee; it’s a massive global community of over 10,000 industry professionals.

From legendary directors and A-list actors to the unsung heroes like sound editors and costume designers, these are people who live and breathe cinema. To even become a member, you usually need to be sponsored by existing members or have earned an Oscar nomination yourself, ensuring that the “excellence” is judged by true peers.

A Two-Step Journey to Victory

The path to the podium is divided into two distinct phases:

  1. The Nomination Phase (The Peer Review): In this stage, members vote within their specific expertise. Actors nominate actors, directors nominate directors, and so on. It’s a “it takes one to know one” philosophy. However, there is one exception: Best Picture. Every single member, regardless of their craft, gets to cast a vote for the top film of the year.
  2. The Final Vote (The Global Choice): Once the nominees are announced, the rules change. Now, every member can vote in almost every category. This is why a cinematographer might have a say in who wins Best Actress, and a screenwriter helps decide Best Visual Effects. It turns the awards into a collective celebration of the industry’s consensus.

The Math Behind the Magic: Preferential Voting

While most categories are decided by a simple majority, Best Picture uses a unique and often misunderstood method called “Preferential Voting.” Instead of picking just one winner, voters rank the movies (1st choice, 2nd choice, etc.). If no film gets more than 50% of the top-spot votes, the film with the least votes is eliminated. Those votes are then redistributed to the voters’ second choices. This cycle continues until one movie emerges with a clear majority. This system ensures that the winner is a film that most people truly admire, rather than one that is merely “polarizing.”

The Vault of Silence

The level of secrecy involved is legendary. The accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) handles the ballots with the kind of security you’d expect for nuclear codes. Only two partners at the firm know the results before the envelopes are opened on stage. Not even the Academy President or the show’s producers get a sneak peek.

This blend of peer recognition, complex mathematics, and iron-clad secrecy is exactly why, after nearly a century, the Oscar still remains the most coveted prize in storytelling.
