Cricket in Crisis: Politics Eclipses Sport as Bangladesh Excluded from World Cup

The sudden exclusion of Bangladesh from the 2026 T20 World Cup, coupled with the hasty inclusion of Scotland, has plunged global cricket into a deep crisis. The shadow of politics has seemingly engulfed the playing field, triggering a storm of criticism regarding the role of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has described the development as a “sad moment” for the sport.

Security Fears and the Plea for Relocation
The controversy stems from the upcoming T20 World Cup. Just weeks before the tournament was set to commence, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) refused to send its squad to India. The primary reason cited was the ongoing political instability and specific threats emerging from West Bengal. Reports indicate that Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise in the IPL, received open threats from right-wing groups and the West Bengal unit of the BJP warning against the inclusion of Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman in his team.

Acknowledging the gravity of these threats, the BCB expressed severe concerns regarding player safety and formally requested the ICC to relocate their scheduled matches from India to the tournament’s co-host, Sri Lanka.

The ICC’s ‘Logistical’ Defense and Scotland’s Entry
Citing the tournament’s start date of February 7, the ICC summarily rejected Bangladesh’s request. The governing body argued that changing venues at such short notice was “logistically impractical.” However, in a surprising turn of events, they invited Scotland to fill the vacancy.

Sports analysts argue that the ICC’s reasoning does not hold water. The last-minute inclusion of Scotland necessitates immediate arrangements for visas, travel, and accommodation—logistical hurdles just as complex as shifting a venue. Furthermore, Scotland does not possess the same commercial leverage as Bangladesh, which could negatively impact tournament revenue.

Double Standards and Questionable Neutrality
The primary source of outrage among cricket fans is the ICC’s perceived double standards. In the past, the body accommodated India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the 2025 Champions Trophy on security grounds. Similarly, the 2025 Asia Cup was relocated entirely to the UAE due to India-Pakistan tensions. While the security concerns and venue change requests of the “Big Two” were accepted, the ICC took a rigid stance against Bangladesh, disregarding third-party security assessments that supported the BCB’s claims.

Politics vs. Cricket: Voices of Dissent
Prominent Indian diplomat and MP Shashi Tharoor recently weighed in on the issue through a column in The Times of India. He asserted that “as citizens and sports lovers, we must stand up for the principle that the playing field should remain a sanctuary for merit, not a theatre for performative nationalism.” Regrettably, critics feel the global regulator has failed to shield the game from this very politicization.

A Geopolitical Standoff
The dispute is now spilling over into broader geopolitics. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued veiled threats to boycott the tournament, to which the ICC has responded with warnings of severe sanctions. World cricket now stands at a precarious crossroads. As political mudslinging continues to tarnish the spirit of the game, fans are left asking: who will take responsibility for the irreparable damage being done to cricket?
