The Month of Mercy, Forgiveness, and Salvation, The Importance and Virtues of the Holy Month of Ramadan

One of the Five Pillars of Islam is fasting, or ‘Siyam’. The month of Ramadan is held in high esteem by the global Muslim Ummah. It is not merely about abstaining from food, but rather a golden opportunity for self-purification, self-restraint, and attaining the nearness of Allah the Almighty. The importance of this month is immense in the light of the Quran and Hadith.

The greatest characteristic of Ramadan is that the Holy Qur’an was revealed in this month for the guidance of humankind. Almighty Allah says:

“The month of Ramadan is the month in which the Qur’an was sent down, a guidance for mankind and clear proof of the guidance and the criterion for distinguishing between right and wrong.” (Surah Al-Baqarah: 185)

In a Hadith, mentioning the special nature of Ramadan, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:

“When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

In this month lies ‘Laylatul Qadr,’ or the Night of Power. The Holy Qur’an declares that worship on this single night is better than worship in a thousand months. The supplications and deeds performed on this night are accepted directly at the Divine Court.

Allah the Almighty has announced special rewards for those who fast. In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah says:

“Fasting is for Me, and I will reward it Myself.” Furthermore, on the Day of Judgment, only those who fasted will enter Paradise through a special gate called ‘Rayyan’.

Ramadan is an ideal time to wash away all minor sins of the past. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever fasts in Ramadan with faith and seeking reward will have all his previous sins forgiven.”

Fasting properly.

Reciting the Quran and making dhikr frequently.

Standing by the poor and needy and giving sadaqah.

Avoiding unnecessary lies, gossips, and arguments.

May the holy month of Ramadan bring peace, prosperity, and Allah’s pleasure to our lives.
