Tarique Rahman is set to become the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh

After a long two-decade wait and through political ups and downs, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is taking over the reins of government in an unprecedented popular mandate. The party has secured an absolute majority in the first free and fair election held under the interim government following the 2024 popular uprising. With this victory, Tarique Rahman is set to be inaugurated as the country’s prime minister after 17 years of exile and a long struggle.

According to preliminary data from the Election Commission and reports from domestic and international media, the BNP has secured a single majority in the 300-seat parliament (the magic number is more than 151). In many constituencies, the party’s candidates have won by a wide margin. Tarique Rahman himself has won by a landslide in both the Bগুড়া-6 and Dhaka-17 constituencies.

A flood of congratulations has poured in from the world stage for Tarique Rahman’s historic victory. In a message, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated, saying, “This victory is a reflection of the confidence of the people of Bangladesh.” The United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union have also welcomed this democratic transition.

In a brief post-victory statement, Tarique Rahman called on the nation to remain calm and to exercise restraint during victory parades. He said:

“This victory is not personal to me; this victory belongs to the common people of Bangladesh. We want to build a state where the rule of law, human rights, and freedom of speech are guaranteed.”

He also mentioned that his government’s priority will be to restore economic stability and rebuild state institutions that were damaged over the past decade and a half.

The interim government led by Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has paved the way for a peaceful transfer of power by conducting this election extremely successfully. According to political analysts, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh has embarked on a new democratic journey where the will of the people will be supreme.
