The Quranic Metaphor of Mountains as Pegs or Stakes

Several verses in the Holy Quran describe the structure and function of mountains. One of the most prominent passages is found in Surah An-Naba, verses 6 and 7:

“Have We not made the earth a resting place? And the mountains as stakes (pegs)?” (Quran 78:6-7)

In these verses, Allah uses the Arabic word ‘Awtad’ (plural of Watad). Literally, this refers to the stakes or pegs used to anchor a tent, where a significant portion of the peg is driven deep into the ground to provide stability.

Furthermore, Surah An-Nahl (16:15), Surah Al-Anbiya (21:31), and Surah Luqman (31:10) mention that mountains were placed on the earth to prevent it from shaking or swaying with its inhabitants—a concept referred to as ‘Rawasiya’.

What Does Modern Geology Say?

Until the mid-20th century, geologists largely viewed mountains as mere elevated masses on the Earth’s surface. However, with the development of Plate Tectonics theory and advancements in seismology, the scientific understanding of mountains underwent a radical shift.

1. Deep Roots and Isostasy

According to modern Earth science, what we see of a mountain above the surface is only a fraction of its total structure. Mountains have deep “roots” that extend several times their surface height into the ground. In the mid-19th century, Sir George Airy and John Pratt proposed the concept of Isostasy, which explains this phenomenon of gravitational equilibrium.

Much like a nail driven into wood or a peg holding a tent, these roots anchor the mountain. For instance, while Mount Everest stands about 9 kilometers above sea level, its roots can extend down to 250 kilometers into the Earth’s crust.

2. Plate Tectonics and Stability

The Earth’s outer shell, the lithosphere, is divided into several large plates. When these plates collide, the Earth’s crust folds and rises to form Fold Mountains.

Geologically, these mountains act like anchors at the boundaries of tectonic plates. They provide a level of structural stability to the Earth’s crust, reducing the frequency and intensity of tremors. This aligns closely with the Quranic description of mountains preventing the earth from “swaying” or “shaking.”

Historical and Scientific Context: A Comparative Analysis

In the 7th century, long before the advent of modern geology, humans generally perceived mountains simply as massive piles of rock. The idea that a mountain could have a massive underground structure was beyond the imagination of the time. Yet, the Quranic choice of the word ‘Awtad’ is remarkably precise.

To the people of the Arabian Peninsula, a Watad (tent peg) was a familiar object. They knew that for a peg to be effective, most of it had to be buried underground to keep the tent secure. Today, 1,400 years later, geological research has validated this metaphor.

Renowned scientists have noted the accuracy of these descriptions:

  • Dr. Frank Press: A former President of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and science advisor to President Jimmy Carter. In his book Earth, he illustrates that mountains are shaped like wedges/pegs and possess deep roots that stabilize the crust.
  • Professor Siaveda: A Japanese marine geologist, upon hearing these Quranic descriptions, expressed astonishment, noting that modern science only discovered these facts in recent decades—making it impossible for a human to have known this 1,400 years ago.

The Mechanism of Balance

The Earth’s mantle exists in a semi-fluid state, upon which the tectonic plates float. Without mountains, the movement of these plates would be far more erratic, leading to catastrophic instability on the surface. Mountains help “fasten” these plates together. This balancing act is part of a process that maintains the density equilibrium between the massive weight of the mountain above and the material below.

Conclusion: The Bridge Between Faith and Science

Describing mountains as “pegs” is not merely a poetic device; it is a profound scientific reality. The alignment between Quranic descriptions and modern geology suggests that these insights are not coincidental.

While science is an ever-evolving field where theories are refined over time, the Quranic information regarding mountain structures continues to be reinforced by new discoveries. This serves as a testament for many that the Quran originated from a Divine source with ultimate knowledge of the universe’s design.
